Postdocs from all backgrounds are encouraged to attend as this talk will be presented for a general audience.

In this workshop, participants will learn what a reflective teaching statement is and what qualities make it effective. This workshop is facilitated by the UVA Center for Teaching Excellence.

Abstract Submission Deadline For Postdoctoral Research Symposium

The annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium will be held on Sepember 20, 2016 from 8:30 am -1:00 pm in Newcomb Hall. The organizers are accepting abstracts from current UVA postdocs for poster and oral presentations in 3 categories: Life Sciences; Physical Sciences & Engineering; and Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences. The following prizes will be awarded in each category:

  • $750 travel award for 1st place oral presentation
  • $250 gift card for 1st place poster winner
  • $150 gift card for 2nd place poster winner

NIH 9th Annual Career Symposium and Free Bus Transportation

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) holds an annual Career Symposium that will be taking place on Friday, May 6th, and UVA is providing free bus transportation for graduate students and postdocs to attend. The NIH Career Symposium is an excellent opportunity to learn about the diversity of career options available to PhD holders during this free, day-long event. The symposium includes panels and workshops with over 75 speakers covering the spectrum of careers including: academics, industry, government, patents/tech transfer, policy, and communications. The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs is partnering with the School of Medicine to provide a bus for transportation between UVA the NIH Career Symposium in Bethesda, Maryland.

UVA Innovation in Pedagogy Summit

We are excited to announce registration is now open for the 4th Annual UVa Innovation in Pedagogy Summit to be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in Newcomb Hall. The Summit is designed to enlighten, inspire, and engage instructors from all disciplines about excellence in teaching and learning.

 

This year’s theme is “Making Learning Visible.” In the plenary session, photographer and educator, Martin Springborg, will make learning visible through an ongoing, national photographic essay on teaching and learning in higher education. He will involve UVa faculty featured in these photographs, who will share their reflections on what the pictures tell us about their pedagogical approach. In 21 outstanding breakout sessions, presenters from across the University and the Commonwealth will share their innovative approaches to engage students and foster learning. A number of these will involve collaborative presentations among instructors, graduate students, and/or undergraduate students.

Public Days 2016

In the early years of the University of Virginia, the academic year concluded with "Public Day", when the students would present their research to the public, inviting the community to the grounds to share in the fruits of their studies. The tradition faded away in the mid-nineteenth century, but in 2014, the university began the revival of the tradition. Today's Public Days includes an an annual exhibition and reception on the Lawn and community partner events to make the scholarly and creative accomplishments of UVA students visible to the larger public.

Bommae Kim, a PhD candidate in the Psychology department, will show us how to use support vector machines for character recognition. Increasing Openness and Reproducibility in Quantitative Research Workshop

There are many actions researchers can take to increase the openness and reproducibility of their work. Please join us for a workshop, led by the Center for Open Science, to learn how to incorporate these into your own work. The workshop will be hands-on. Using example studies, attendees will participate in creating a reproducible project from start to finish. Topics will include: Project documentation, Version control, Pre-Analysis plans, and Open source tools to easily implement these concepts in a scientific workflow.

This workshop is aimed at graduate students and post docs, across disciplines, who are engaged in quantitative research. The workshop does not require any specialized knowledge of programming. Participants will gain a foundation for incorporating reproducible, transparent practices into their current workflows.

Third Annual Hack.UVA
